The primary focus for most community advocates is assisting people to connect with people, places, and activities in their community based on their interests, gifts and talents, and the development and maintenance of valued roles. Supporting people in volunteer jobs, joining community clubs and groups, exploring recreation and leisure activities, running errands, and working on fitness routines may also be part of your job duties. See what some of our current employees say about working at KFI:

  • “As a community advocate, I not only felt employment satisfaction from helping people reach goals, maintain independence, and complete necessary errands and tasks but, as the cliche goes, I gained many skills and new information too….. I know some people who consider working in this field are nervous, wondering if they have the traits and skills to work with people with various circumstances. The only skill needed is to respect others and to view each person as an individual. The rest will fall in place, especially if you get as much support, co-operation, and respect from your co-workers and supervisors at KFI as they’ve given me.”
    –Kara Schreiber, DSP since 2010
  • “I love my job because of the flexibility and non-traditional hours…..Every day is a new experience… I have learned a lot and have grown so much as a person, employee, wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, etc. Since I joined the KFI team in 2008. I have worked as an education technician, have done CNA work, done retail and food services, and have also done DSP work for other companies, but none have come close to KFI!”
    –Darlene Cookson, DSP since 2009
  • “……So I go to work every day, fulfilling my passion; which is awesome. I feel like we work for the make a wish foundation only more advanced, we work for the “build a life foundation”.”
    –Wanda Rideout, DSP since 2009
